“Just one more thing,” Leo muttered, his voice raspy. He stared at the list scrawled on the back of a faded photograph, his mother’s bold strokes a stark contrast to his own exhaustion. She’d wanted to visit every national park, volunteer at an animal shelter, and learn to play the piano. He felt as if gravity were suddenly doubled. He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to alleviate the ache in his bones. He wanted to sleep. He wanted to escape. He looked down and just stared, without the motivation to move.
